Portable from the day one

The UNIX operating system, as well as its many successors, was designed to guarantee the same working environment on many diverse computing platforms. The C programming language, originally developed by Brian Kernighan & Dennis Ritchie, allowed for less dependence on CPU-specific Assemblers, and the distribution of source codes of UNIX across universities contributed to its popularity. The noteworthy network stack implementation of Berkeley Software Distribution, aka BSD, cemented its position as the best operating system for network machines and servers. So the question naturally arises: if it’s so good at portability, why can’t we port it to pocketable computers? It didn’t take long for the answer to arrive.
